Renminbi Overtakes Hong Kong Dollar as Top FX Pair in Hong Kong
TMTPOST — The U.S. dollar against the Chinese yuan became the most actively traded currency pair in Hong Kong’s foreign-exchange market for the first time in April, according to the Treasury Markets Association’s semi-annual survey. Average daily FX turnover in the city reached US$908.2 billion in April 2026. Dollar-renminbi transactions averaged US$274 billion a day, or 30.2 percent of the total, surpassing the traditional dollar-Hong Kong dollar pair’s US$240.2 billion, or 26.4 percent. Offshore renminbi trading accounted for the bulk of the dollar-yuan volume at US$259.2 billion. The shift marks a milestone in Hong Kong’s role as an offshore renminbi center. The association’s survey, conducted among 62 financial institutions on a sales-desk location basis, also ranked the dollar-yen pair as the third-most active.
