China’s August CPI Rises Moderately, PPI Gains Widen
TMTPOST — China’s consumer price index rose 0.4% month-on-month in August and 0.8% year-on-year, while the producer price index increased 0.4% month-on-month and 3.8% year-on-year, the National Bureau of Statistics said. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 1.0% from a year earlier. The bureau attributed the CPI rebound to international price movements and seasonal increases in food prices. The PPI turnaround reflected higher international commodity prices and stronger demand in some domestic industries amid industrial upgrading. Chief statistician Dong Lijuan of the bureau’s urban division noted that energy prices and certain industrial consumer goods contributed to the CPI rise, while coal, non-ferrous metals and chemical sectors helped widen the PPI gain.
